The ADP financed a regional meeting on microdata archive hosted by DataFirst, the data library at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. This meeting resulted in the establishment of the African Association of Statistical Data Archivists (AASDA).
AASDA provides a platform for African data curation organisations – National Statistics Offices (NSOs), research organisations and Survey Data Archives – to work collaboratively. The advantages of this collaboration include access for the group to a wider range of skills and expertise, and cost-sharing and the development of collaborative systems. The Association works to provide mutual encouragement with regard to data curation in the region, in particular with regard to the development and implementation of standards and good practices in data documentation, dissemination and preservation in the region.
The establishment of an Association of Survey Data Archivists in Africa can be seen as a step towards formalizing data sharing on the continent through the creation of Survey Data Archives in African countries, and possibly facilitating linkages among them.
